Northern Lights Spotted in Maine

NANAIMO, British Columbia - The night sky over Vancouver Island turned into a canvas of bright, colorful, and dancing lights on Wednesday when the aurora borealis made an appearance. A photographer on the island captured the stunning spectacle, highlighting the region's natural beauty.

The aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, primarily visible at high latitude regions. The phenomenon is caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with the Earth's magnetic field.

Photographer Nate deLabry shared some of the first aurora photos from the United States on July 13, 2023. The images, taken in Maine, showcased the vibrant hues of the auroral display.

While the aurora borealis is an occasional sight in Canada, it is less common in the United States. However, recent geomagnetic activity has increased the likelihood of auroral sightings in lower latitudes.
