A state of emergency has been declared in southern Iceland after another volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula. This marks the fourth eruption since December, according to the Iceland Meteorological Office. The ongoing eruption is taking place on the Sundhnúksgígaröð crater row, releasing gas and lava flows.
Experts from the Lava Centre warn of potential gas pollution hazards in the affected area. Iceland's Met Office reports that volcanic activity near the town of Grindavik is gradually easing, but aerial images indicate that lava flows continue to spew from the crater.
This volcanic eruption follows weeks of intense earthquake activity in southwest Iceland. While the current eruption is reportedly weakening, authorities urge caution and remain vigilant as the situation continues to evolve.
